MARGAO: The residents of Margao and Fatorda have accused the government and the sewerage department of “miserably failing” to stop or control release of raw sewage into open drains and nullahs in their respective towns.
Angry at the negligence of the government and the sewerage department, the residents of these towns have decided stage a protest on October 14 and 15, along Margao-Colva road. They have also decided to erect banners and boards along that road.
The residents warn that if the discharge of sewage continues, an epidemic could breakout in these two towns. This warning has also been, via a letter, communicated to the MMC, health department, chief secretary, district collector and the executive engineer of the sewerage department.
In the letter, the complainant Savio Dias said, “We still hope that the Sewerage Department, the District Administration and the State Government of Goa would act in public interest and stop the health hazards and public nuisance caused due to the untreated and raw sewerage released by their own agencies.”
“At Maddel, Old Market, Comba, Khareband and Fatorda areas, and several other places raw sewerage is being released by the Sewerage Department into open drains and nullahs,” alleged Dias.
