Margao garbage collection in disarray
HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, AUG 28
Margao Municipal Council’s garbage collection system has hit a block, with overflowing bins literally the order of the day in the Commercial capital.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat’s Friday morning tour of the city and his directions to Chief Officer Y B Tawde is a pointer that things are not rosy on the garbage collection front.
Even as Fomento to gearing up to install the waste treatment plant and machinery at Sonsodo after the monsoons, MMC garbage collection system seems to have gone haywire.
Inquiries only revealed that nearly half the fleet of garbage collection trucks are down in the garage with major technical snags. The proposal to buy four new garbage compactors have just been okayed by the Civic body and the Chief Minister, and it would take some time before the new vehicles take the place of the worn out vehicles.
Secondly, reports suggest a divide between the sanitary section and the garbage truck drivers for quite some time. The sanitary section, sources say, has no control over the drivers, and this has had a bearing on garbage collection.
That the MMC chief officer finally issued a memo to a garbage truck driver indicates undercurrents in the civic body.
Sources in the know said that the civic body also falls short of manpower requirements. It is learnt that the civic body is helpless to attend to any emergency work in the evenings as there are no workers to work in the evening session.
A Civic official admitted that the question of men and machinery was overlooked by the City Fathers and the powers that be for a long time, resulting in the present state of affairs.
