MARGAO: The student community of Margao on Wednesday staged a protest against the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata. Several students gathered at Lohia Maidan to express their anger over the brutal crime. A large number of students demanded justice and advocated for the safety of women across the country, questioning, “Where is the safe place for women?”
Speaking to reporters, the students stated that rapes occur due to the ‘sick mentality’ of individuals, not because of women’s clothing, work timings, or other factors. “It’s high time people stop viewing women inappropriately and remember that women are human beings too. Men must have a sense of equality towards women,” said one student. She emphasised that we cannot tolerate such incidents.

Another student added that similar cases are not only recurring in Kolkata but also in Goa. “Rape cases are increasing in Goa as well. We need to recognise our responsibilities as citizens. It’s a shame that, despite so many years of independence, we are still witnessing harassment and rape cases in the country,” he said.
The students stressed that they are standing up for humanity and urged a change in mentality towards women. They expressed anger that such crimes affect not only women but children as well and demanded a robust system to address these criminals. “India needs a strong system that ensures rigorous punishment for offenders and women-friendly public spaces. There must be a change in mindset. There is no safety at workplaces or schools, and laws are not being implemented properly,” they alleged.
