MARGAO: Frustrated by multiple incidents of misappropriation of municipal funds, Margao’s councillors have called for a special meeting to address the issue.
At a press conference, Councillor Mahesh Amonkar stated that recent financial scandals have tarnished the reputation of both the councillors and the civic body. He specifically criticised Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar for failing to inform the councillors about a new scam of Rs 17,000, which has further damaged the municipality. This incident follows closely on the heels of a larger Rs 18 lakh scam involving revenues from the feast fair.

The latest controversy, concerning the payment of a Wi-Fi service bill, has sparked a public conflict between Chairperson Shirodkar and former Chief Officer Gaurish Shirodkar, with each accusing the other of being responsible for the malpractices within the municipality.
“We are deeply shocked that, despite the issue being exposed in the media, the Chairperson failed to inform the councillors about the new Rs 17,000 scam,” Amonkar said. He further criticised the Chairperson, pointing out that his election to the position was made possible by the councillors’ support, following the passage of an ordinance by the government. “It was the Chairperson’s duty to inform his fellow councillors about the recent scams and any malpractices reported in the civic body. If the Chairperson believes the former Chief Officer is involved in the alleged scams, it is his responsibility not to recommend the officer’s transfer until the issue is resolved and the money is recovered,” Amonkar added.
Amonkar demanded that the recently transferred CO be reinstated at the MMC to clarify the scandals that have brought embarrassment to the municipal council.
Councillor Camilo Barretto also criticised the administration, alleging that it is failing to function effectively. “Yes, the repeated scams have brought shame upon all the councillors. We are being kept in the dark about these issues,” Barretto stated.
