However, it was shocking to note that the Margao Municipal Council does not seem to be serious on taking a step forward against the roadside fish vendors.

Presently, no timely action by the MMC against these fish vendors has resulted in major traffic congestion and also led to accidents at the market area. Herald had highlighted the issue in the Saturday’s edition wherein the residents were urging the authorities to act immediately.

Police Inspector Gautam Salunke, Margao Traffic Cell, told Herald that they continued with the action against the vehicles parking by the roadside and creating obstructions to the smooth movement of the traffic.

“We have cleared the road in the morning hours of Saturday and we are continuing with the drive. Fish carrying vehicles were given a certain time to unload their fish and thereafter nobody was allowed to park their vehicles by the roadside,” he informed.

PI Salunke also said that the Traffic Cell is issuing challans to the violators on a regular basis, but at the same time he urged the MMC to initiate action against the roadside fish vendors, who are the main reason for traffic congestion over here.

Earlier, Rohit Kadam, Chief Officer, MMC had assured to take action against the fish vendors, causing traffic problems, but failed to act to date.

“We are not against those doing business but it should not create problems to the public, and more especially to the traffic movement. It is the responsibility of the MMC to take strict action against the roadside fish vendors,” Paul Fernandes said.

He further raised questions for not initiating any action by the Margao Municipality.

The fish selling activities by the roadside at the wholesale fish market has become a routine activity. A major congestion can be witnessed during the school hours resulting in a mess.
