A young man from Margao has allegedly been cheated of nearly ₹2 lakh in an online job scam in which unknown persons promised him employment on a ship.
According to a complaint filed with Margao Police Station, the victim, a resident of Calconda, was contacted by individuals who claimed they could arrange a maritime job for him.
To make the offer appear legitimate, the suspects reportedly shared documents and details about a vessel the youth was supposedly scheduled to join. Trusting the authenticity of the opportunity, the victim transferred around ₹2 lakh in multiple instalments between late January and mid-February this year.
The fraud came to light when the promised job failed to materialise and the suspects became unresponsive.
Police have registered a case of cheating and have launched an investigation to identify and trace those involved in the alleged scam.
