VASCO: The officials of the Mormugao Municipal and Health Department inspected sewage overflow at Mestawada following protest by the residents.
The residents complained that the sewage overflowing near the temple was disrupting their daily life and demanded urgent measures to stop the overflowing sewage from a residential building.
Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Girish Borker along with sanitary inspectors from the health department, PWD and police conducted a joint site inspection at Mestawada to assess the situation.
The protestors who were led by Tushar Chari complained that they had to walk through sewage overflowing on roads.
Chari said that the residents are forced to cross the stretch of sewage daily and despite complaints to the builder and concerned authorities, no action was taken.
The locals demanded that the builder must increase the size of the underground tanks or ensure regular clearance of sewage with night soil tankers.
Mormugao Chairperson Girish Borker said that the builder’s claim of obtaining a sewerage NOC was highly questionable. The sewage from the flats was being released into underground tanks, which are now overflowing onto the roads, creating a public nuisance. There was no sewerage pipeline in the area, he pointed out.
Borker assured residents that the municipal council will resolve the issue. He told them that the builder has been asked to vacate all the flats and to allow residents to occupy them only after the sewerage lines are made operational and the sewage issue was resolved.
Borker further informed that the council had already tendered the works of laying new sewerage lines in the area. These works are expected to start next month and will be complete within a year.
Meanwhile, the builder has proposed setting up a sewage treatment plant (STP) within the building premises. But the residents are opposed to the builder’s request to release recycled wastewater into a nearby nullah.
