Predicts heavy showers; police stations put on alert

PANJIM: Heavy-to-very-heavy showers lashed Goa for the second consecutive day on Thursday, even as the Met department has forecast heavy rainfall in the next 72 hours.
Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea over the next 24-hours due to the rough weather.
The 100.5mm (4 inches) of rainfall received in the last 24 hours takes the total rainfall in the State to over 61 inches (6.1 inch above normal) during the current monsoons.
The Met department warning stated: “Winds will be mainly Westerly reaching speeds of 45-50 kmph temporarily reaching 60 kmph in gust. The sea will be rough with Westerly waves. Fishermen are advised not to go out into the sea during next 24 hours.”
MARGAO REPORTER ADDS: After heavy rains disrupted normal life in the State, the authorities have put police stations on alert as the Met department has forecast heavy rainfall with strong winds during the next 72 hours.
Sources at the district police headquarters informed that the police stations have been put on alert as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, incessant rains threw life out of gear on Thursday, though there were no reports of any flooding of low lying areas today in the commercial town.
