Panaji: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has called for a comprehensive discussion on the rent-a-car sector in Goa, highlighting concerns over incidents involving tourists allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and causing accidents.
Speaking on the issue, Lobo said such accidents often result in injuries to local residents, loss of lives, and trauma for tourists involved in the incidents. He noted that many visitors leave Goa with unpleasant memories after being caught up in road accidents during their stay.

The MLA stressed the need for a practical and balanced approach to address the problem, emphasizing that the issue affects not only public safety but also the state’s tourism image.
Lobo urged all stakeholders, including government authorities, tourism representatives, vehicle rental operators, and law enforcement agencies, to come together and deliberate on possible measures to curb drink-driving and reduce accidents involving rented vehicles.
He said a collective effort and well-planned strategy are essential to ensure safer roads for both residents and tourists while maintaining Goa’s reputation as a leading tourist destination.
