Migrants ‘causing nuisance’ in traffic island at MMC building

MARGAO: The traffic island behind the Margao Municipal Council building which was earlier a waiting lobby for labourers has now been converted into a waiting room cum hotel for the migrant labourers. Every morning, the traffic island is messed up with leftover food, plastic bags and filth. A person selling food to the migrant labourers was seen and questioned by the former MMC chairperson Savio Coutinho.  Coutinho said, “Despite complaints and verbal requests, the municipality has failed to act and take measures to keep the traffic island free from migrant labourers and the filth created by them.” Savio criticized the municipality for failing to act, saying that the municipality is mere spectator to the destruction of the island by migrants.
