PANJIM: Whether it’s Goa or Maharashtra, it is the mentality that needs change said Maharashtra’s first lady Amruta Fadnavis.
Speaking at an interaction session at the ongoing Women Economic Forum the wife of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said that violence against women and drug-related crimes were some of the biggest issues facing that State.
“It may be difficult to compare the two states because they are very different in terms of cultures and lifestyles. But when it comes to the crimes against women, it is the mindset that needs to change everywhere in India,” she said.
Speaking to more than 50 people gathered at the WEF, Fadnavis talked not only about issues affecting women but also spoke at length on what it takes to be a full-time mother, wife and employee.
All over the country female infanticide and rape are the biggest issues that needed to be dealt with. “To solve the issue of female infanticide, we need stronger mothers and parents; and with rape, we need very strong laws, immediate action taken against the accuser, but most importantly we need families to be a unit. Everyone must be taught how to be equal without any distinction. Among the poorer classes, moral education will make a huge difference,” she said.
As for her busy politician husband, Amruta who works as an associate vice president at Axis Bank, said she has reconciled with his not being around and understands that he has a bigger job to do.
“In comparison to issues like farmer suicides and violence against women, some of the issues my husband had to deal with, I understand that they should take precedence over me and our daughter. I’ve reconciled with this and our daughter understands too,” said Fadnavis.
Talking about being the wife of one of the most influential men in Maharashtra she believes empowerment to women comes from independence as well as support from the husband and the family.
