BICHOLIM: The Mining Truck Drivers Association from North Goa has decided to go on one day agitation on June 1, at Azad Maidan Panjim demanding financial assistance to truck drivers.
Addressing the media the association’s President Vishnu Sawal said that for more than two years they are unemployed and in spite of several memorandums to the CM the government is not taking steps to solve their problems.
“Since September 2012 mining activities in the State are suspended due to which the trucks do not have any work and under such circumstances we are unemployed,” Sawal said. He added, “The government has given packages to the truck owners but the truck drivers are at loss.”
“We had earlier submitted our demands to the then CM, Manohar Parrikar and have also made several applications to Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant and the present CM but we did not get anything,” Sawal claimed.
“During the meeting of truck drivers at Honda the Sanquelim MLA had assured that the problem would be sorted out before December 14, 2014 but it has not. We are unemployed for two years and have no source of income and as a protest we will stage an agitation on June 1 at Azad Maidan,” Sawal said.
He said the association has 510 members and all would participate in the agitation. Other members including Chnadrakant Sakhalkar, Rameshwar Parab, Mahadev Gawda, Sitaram Gawde were present.
