VASCO: At least 70 students travelling in two different buses had a miraculous escape when a speeding tanker dashed against their bus near Zuari Indian Oil Tanking Ltd (ZIOTL) at Sancoale on the four-lane highway (NH17B) on Tuesday.
According to witnesses, the accident took place in the afternoon when the buses belonging to a school were heading towards Zuarinagar by taking a U-turn, opposite to the main gate of ZIOTL on the four lane highway at Sancoale. At the same time, a kerosene tanker proceeding to Verna from Zuarinagar rammed into a bus. The impact was such that the bus dashed against another. It is learnt that the accident was due to the tanker break failure.
An eye witness Ismail Sheikh said, “There were around 70 students travelling in two buses. All had a narrow escape. I got into both the buses and inquired about the students’ well being.” Shaikh said he was coming down to Vasco along with his parents in a car when the accident occurred.
There was no official complaint lodged before the police. The traffic on this lane was paralyzed for nearly about 45 minutes.
