CURCHOREM: Fish vendors had a miraculous escape when a wooden beam broke and the roof came down along with some sheets and fell on the main platform in the fish market, at Curchorem, on Saturday.
According to fish vendor Maria, they had informed the Curchorem civic body on several occasion, about the worsening condition of the market.
“The adjacent shed where the dry fish, chicken and other items sellers were occupying was demolished in 2015 due to poor conditions of the structure but till now it is not repaired. Lights in the existing shed are not functioning, no proper toilet facilities as the existing one is in a dilapidated and unhygienic condition and no one bothered to maintain it except giving assurances,” said Maria.
Looking at the condition of the market one can say the ‘Swachh Bharat’ and ‘Nitol Goem’ mission aimed towards cleanliness is largely forgotten. There are also concerns of health hazards arising from present condition as water is stagnant in the drains.
Chairperson of Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council Felix Fernandes said that the fish market temporarily would be shifted in the CADA premises and get the existing fish market repaired for which the tender would be issued soon. “The process of constructing a new fish market will be done immediately once the Kadamba Transport Corporation authorities complete their demarcation of present bus stand land and hands over to municipality,” said Fernandes.
