MARGAO: For the first time since the Margao civic body tried to implement the bio-metric finger scan reader over half a decade ago, Margao Municipal employees on Wednesday finally recorded their attendance on the finger scan readers.
Employees working in the municipal building queued up to record their attendance this morning, a day after they agreed to use the bio-metric finger scan readers following a meeting held by the Director of Municipal Administration, Elvis Gomes.
Municipal workers employed on the field are not mandated to use the bio-metric finger scan readers.
The concept of bio-metric finger scan readers was first sought to be introduced by then MMC chief officer N D Agrawal, who is now the South Goa Collector.
The proposal, however, encountered stiff opposition from the municipal employees, forcing the civic body to abandon the project.
The concept was sought to be revived by then chairperson Savio Coutinho, but was kept in cold storage following the intervention of then CM Digambar Kamat, who succumbed to the dictates of the municipal employees.
With the employees opposing the bio-metric finger scan concept, the then chief minister mooted CCTVs as a means to bring the employees under scanner, but the concept too failed to deliver results for want of effective monitoring by the Council.
