MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council has found itself in a tight spot over initiating action against illegalities in the markets.
Two days after district Collector, N D Agrawal directed the Civic body to act against fish cutting and cleaning in the SGPDA wholesale fish market, there’s more trouble brewing against the civic body on the illegal animal slaughter in the Gandhi market.
Sources in the know said the district Collector has taken cognisance of a letter written by the Margo Municipal body to the Director of Animal Husbandry seeking action against illegal animal slaughter.
A visibly disturbed district Collector is believed to have questioned the MMC’s move to approach the Animal Husbandry director and other authorities when the civic body is empowered by the Goa Municipalities Act to act against illegalities. Agrawal, sources said, has contended that the municipality should have initiated immediate action against the illegalities instead of pushing the ball in the court of other authorities.
In the case of the fish cutting activity in the wholesale fish market, the Collector issued directions to the civic body to stop the activity when it made submissions that the fish cutting and cleaning activities raises a stink in the market.
During the hearing of a petition under section 133 of the Cr P C, the Collector questioned the Municipal officials as to why the Civic body did not initiate action against the fish cutting activity all this time if it was illegal in nature before issuing directions to stop the activity and file a compliance report at the next date of hearing.
