MARGAO: Margao municipal market panel on Wednesday resolved to crack a whip on encroachments as well as illegal handcarts causing traffic congestion in the city.
In fact, the issue over encroachments and illegal handcarts took centre stage at a meeting of the market committee headed by Chairperson Pratima Coutinho after a trader tried to manhandle municipal workers while clearing encroachments from the city passages on Tuesday.
After the meeting, market committee chairperson Pratima Coutinho said the meeting has resolved to initiate strict action against encroachments and illegal handcarts. “We have observed there’s traffic congestion during peak hours between 1 and 3 pm because of presence of illegal handcarts on the roads. We have now decided to seize all illegal handcarts found on the roads during peak hours and dismantle them”, Pratima informed.
She said the meeting has also resolved to auction sign boards confiscated by the civic body instead of returning them back to the owners.
On the encroachment menace plaguing the municipal markets and footpaths, Pratima said the meeting has taken strong cognisance of the Tuesday incident wherein a trader tried to manhandle municipal workers while discharging their duties. “We have drawn attention of the municipal chief officer to the incident as well as the encroachment by a vendor in the Gandhi market. The meeting has asked the CO to come down heavily on habitual encroachers and give relief to people”, she said.
CO Deepali Naik said that she would issue orders to the market inspectors to clear illegal handcarts from the roads during peak hours.
The meeting has cleared some proposals for transfers of sopo, while deferring some proposals and rejecting others.
It was also decided to complete balance work in the Gandhi market and also take up construction of drain opposite the Molio pharmacy.
