MARGAO: Margao witnessed major water logging at many places even as the Margao Municipality had a meeting this evening to review the monsoon preparedness in the city.
The KTC-Old market circle road was inundated with water as heavy pre-monsoon rains lashed the city for quite some time. The situation at the old station road was no better, with the road flooded with rain water, forcing pedestrians to wade through the water.
When contacted, MMC Chief Officer Deepali Naik said that the meeting reviewed the progress of pre-monsoon works in the city and informed that 80 per cent of the works have been put in place till date.
She said that the Water Resources department has taken up desilting of the River sal on both sides of the Khareband bridge to rid the channel of weeds and thick vegetation.
“We have now asked the WRD to clear the blockade under the bridge to ensure smooth flow of rain water”, she said.
Replying to a question, Ms Naik said the Civic body has warned the government agencies to clear the debris lying in the storm water drains or face action. She said the Civic body would take up the work of desilting of the drains and submit bills to the concerned agencies for payment.
