MARGAO: Garbage from the Margao Municipal Council areas was finally picked up and sent to Sonsoddo with full police protection.
Curtorim locals, who have been disallowing waste from being taken to Sonsoddo, justified their demand for dumping only segregated garbage at the plant.
With the Curtorim locals standing their ground on the issue, the MMC has begun segregating garbage in certain pockets of the town.
The vehicles which had picked up garbage on Monday were lying at various locations as they were sent back. Tyres of several compactor trucks and vehicles parked near the Sonsoddo were deflated by unknown persons allegedly at midnight. The workers of the door to door collection as well as the garbage workers started work as usual on Tuesday morning but had to face difficulties due to deflated tyres.
The MMC managed to send a tipper truck full of garbage to Sonsoddo in the morning on Tuesday after which some women from Curtorim kept a close watch to stop any more vehicles.
MMC Chairperson Babita Angle said that the MMC has requested the Fatorda police to facilitate transportation of garbage to Sonsoddo.
Meanwhile, after a grueling eight days of tireless operations by numerous personnel, the Fire & Emergency Services has officially called off the major operations of the Sonsoddo fire. This is one of the longest running operations of the Fire Services have handled in Goa in recent times.
The MMC has however been directed to maintain a strict vigil on the situation at Sonsodo.
