VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council and the local police will take strict action against those selling illegal fish outside the fish market and at strategic locations in municipal areas.
The decision was taken during a special meeting called by Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida on Wednesday in presence Deputy Collector Dattaraj Dessai, Chief Officer Jayant Tari, MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar, Mamlatdar Dhiren Banavalikar and councillors along with police, traffic police, and municipal engineers.

Vasco’s new fish market has become a hot topic for the discussion and construction of the new fish market is being hampered due to this unresolved problem of illegal fish vendors. Even after holding several meetings, the problem of this fish market did not go away.
The meeting resolved to take strict action against roadside fish vendors as well as wholesalers as per the demand of women fish vendors from the Vasco fish market. The meeting also discussed the issue regarding construction of a new fish market.
“From Thursday onwards the police along with the municipality staff will ask wholesale fish sellers as well as vendors sitting in strategic places outside the fish market under the jurisdiction of MMC to close down their businesses. The Deputy Collector has ordered the police to take action if needed”, the meeting resolved.
The Deputy Collector said that the law should be applied to all. Accordingly, strict action will be taken against encroachment in Vasco, Baina, Mangor hill, New vaddem and Vaddem, areas.
Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida said that the construction of the new fish market would begin in the next three to four days. “The work will begin once the demands of women fish vendors from the fish market are fulfilled by clearing the illegal vendors”, he added.
