MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Thursday resolved to fix the sanitation fees for New Market and Gandhi Market and the government quarters in its jurisdiction.
At the general council meeting, MMC chairperson Lyndon Pereira resolved to form the bylaws with regards to illegal businesses operating without trade licences in the commercial capital, which are nearly 60 per cent.

The Council has also resolved to renew the lease deed of two petrol pumps of Bharat Petroleum, and two others with 10 per cent hike in fees. However, the Council kept on hold the proposal moved by the Traffic Cell, Margao pertaining to introducing the pay parking scheme at various locations in the town.
The councillors opined that the civic body should not burden the public to pay the parking fee, when they are already facing hard times due to COVID-19 pandemic.
“This issue of pay parking is directly related to the people and hence we need to take public into confidence before implementing the decision,” suggested councillor Sagun Naik.
Deliberating on the issue pertaining to traders or the establishments conducting business without trade licence, councillor Ghanashyam Shirodkar suggested that the procedure needs to be simplified and a system needs to be put in place.
MMC chairperson Lyndon Pereira brought to the notice of the councillors that nearly 60 per cent of establishments in the commercial capital are doing business without trade licence.
“The Council has resolved to engage a private agency to handle and treat the garbage in the shed at Nessai, which belongs to the civic body,” the chairperson said.
Chief Officer Angelo Fernandes brought to the notice of council that the civic body needs to utilise Rs 8.12 crore under 13th Finance Commission within six months.
He listed out the pending grants received under 14th and 15th Finance Commission which is almost Rs 18 crore and lying unutilised.
The CO urged the councillors to submit the proposal related to development works to make best use of the grants received.
