A nationwide three-day bank strike scheduled to begin on September 28, 2026, has been officially deferred following successful late-night negotiations between bank unions and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA).
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) called off the proposed walkout after the IBA agreed to form a high-level joint committee. This committee will examine the long-standing demand for a five-day banking week by considering all remaining Saturdays as official holidays, exploring operational alternatives, and consulting stakeholders and customers.
Because of the agreement, bank branches across the country will remain open and operate as usual, successfully averting potential financial disruptions that would have otherwise coincided with the hectic half-yearly closing of accounts. Other related agitations planned by the union have also been put on hold while discussions continue.
