The issue dominated the gram sabha with agitated members pointing out that a mackerel is available in the market for Rs 25. They demanded that the government take immediate steps to see that the fish catch in Goa is made first available to locals and then export to other places. It was pointed out that the trawlers enjoy diesel at subsidised rates, but lamented that most of the fish netted by them go for export, leaving the locals with no option than to buy fish at high prices.
Sarpanch Frank Fernandes was asked to send the resolution taken to fisheries minister. Discussion was also held on the demand to increase police patrolling in village in view of the increase in number of thefts with sarpanch having informed that already the police have increased number of police patrolling in Navelim. As to the issue of tenants verification, sarpanch clarified that the panchayat has been carrying OUT verification with the help of police however with onset of monsoons the same had been stopped and shall be carried out after the season.
