BELGAUM: Continuing with their efforts to seek solutions to the rising interstate crimes involving criminals from Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka in the border areas of all the three states, all top police officials of border districts from these states convened a meeting in Belgaum.
The meeting was convened to identify lacunas and overcome the lapses in police intelligence. Gaps in the intelligence inputs, which will be plugged to prevent inter-state criminal activities on the border, have been identified during the meeting.
Apart from a decision to set up a fool-proof system to monitor and control these crimes, issues pertaining to inter-state drug and illicit liquor trade which is thriving despite earlier measures were discussed during the meeting. SP (Crime) Kartik Kashyap, South Goa SP Shekhar Prabhudesai and other senior officials from Goa were present.
Speaking at a joint news conference, IGP Belgaum Umesh Kumar and IGP Kolhapur Ritesh Kumar said information about several aspects relating to detection and prevention of crimes in which accused from different states are involved was exchanged.
Ritesh Kumar said an analysis on the expectations of police officials from Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka was made at the meeting and attempts would be made in the coming days to prevent crimes like illegal supply of drugs, alcohol and valuables between the three states.
“Apart from setting up 20 special police teams from three states, check posts on the border will further be bolstered to ensure that none of the criminals indulged in the illegal supply of goods. The police officials from all the states will share information about all the criminal activities to effectively curb the rising incidents of supply of illicit liquor. The SPs and higher officials from all these states are regularly in touch relating to various criminal activities and measures have been taken to bring the culprits to book,” IGP Ritesh Kumar ascertained.
SP Kartik Kashyap said the officials of the coastal state are cooperating with both Maharashtra and Karnataka officials to prevent the criminals from operating from all these states. He said the Goa police are sharing information with regard to most of the incidents of crime that involved accused from Goa who are committing crimes allegedly in Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Replying to a question, Belgaum Police Commissioner Ravi S said Belgaum police would be sensitized in treating Goans visiting Belgaum in a polite manner and render them proper guidance.
A list of the accused involved in robberies, kidnapping, murders and illegal trade on the border was shared by officials besides information about their activities. The meeting discussed about starting joint police check posts on borders of the three states and information about many criminals who are absconding for sometime was also shared.
