The cell was dissolved by the MMC because of the presence of two non councillors in it. Ever since the new SWMC took charge not one meeting has been convened to have a roadmap on how to handle the garbage of the town. In another four more months, the new cell will be one year old.
As soon as the SWMC was formed in July 2014, the much hyped and much discussed door-to-door collection of garbage began and was running successfully. People began to not just cooperate but watch dogs to ensure that the collection of waste is in segregated form. They also kept a check on outsiders dumping garbage in the town. Strict measures like police complaints, fines and shaming the offenders on social media were also employed.
The committee was dissolved at an MMC council meet and a new committee comprising of councillors was formed. The committee has been defunct since then. There are 4 trucks, 2 compactors and other equipment lying unused and spoilt due to a lack of will to begin work. The Municipal Councillors have been bragging about what they don’t have rather than using and utilising what they got.
What the SWMC started has a faded effect on the town. The unscrupulous ways of dumping garbage have reduced. Savio Coutinho who was a non-member in the first SWMC says, “If there is a strong will and a sincere and collective effort, the SWMC can be re-railed in the town in a matter of 4 months because 50 tonnes of garbage a day is still an easy quantity to handle”.
