MARGAO: After a rabid dog triggered a scare in the Borda-Gogol locality, animal rescue activists descended on the locality to undertake anti-rabies vaccination and sterilization of strays.
As many as 100 dogs in the locality were vaccinated and sterilized ~ thanks to a joint operation conducted by South Goa Welfare Trust for Animals in collaboration with International Animal Rescue. Around nine dog catchers went about the work of catching strays and vaccinating them with anti-rabies dose, besides sterilization.
Coordinator of South Goa Welfare Trust for Animals Sandra Fernandes told the media that owners should take care by getting their dogs vaccinated with anti-rabies. “It is now confirmed that the rabid dog, which went on a biting spree, earlier this week, was not a stray one. It belonged to an owner. Two other dogs of the owner have been kept under observation at our dog shelter,” she said.
“People should understand that NGOs are meant to tackle the stray menace through the Animal Birth Control programme. Due to our limitations and with a lone dog catcher at our disposal, our program has hit a road block. If individual owners take care of their dogs, it will help a lot,” she said.
