PANJIM: Almost a year after a barge grazed against the old Mandovi bridge pillar, the Public Works Department has now thought it fit to entrust the task of assessing the condition of the pillars to the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), after the private company which owns the barge threw its hands up expressing inability to do the survey of the damage.
The under water survey of pier 9 of the old Mandovi bridge has begun and the NIO is expected to complete the same within the next two days.
Executive Engineer of PWD, Ulhas Kerker in charge of this task told Herald that a private barge had brushed against pier 9 of the old Mandovi bridge a year ago.
“There was no direct impact and outwardly there was no damage to the pier except that its plaster had chipped off partially,” he said.
The private company was however unable to get an underwater survey done and after much correspondence, the PWD has entrusted the task to NIO, Dona Paula.
“After we get the report we will submit it to the ministry for road transport and highways in case any remedial measures are to be taken,” said this PWD official.
In the meantime, the Captain of Ports has directed vessels operating in River Mandovi to maintain caution as the under way survey work is in progress and not to cause any hindrance around the inspection site.
