No mega Sao Joao celebrations in Salcete

Margao: This year, due to the COVID pandemic, there were no ‘big’ Sao Joao celebrations in Salcete although smaller-sized celebrations were held in pockets of the taluka with revellers making most of the occasion.   

Every year, there are grand festivities and many have said they miss the fun and frolic of such events and all other aspects including jumping in the well, wearing ‘copels’, music and dancing and the traditional food preparations.

Local Dyna Fernandes reminisced with fondness the earlier celebrations and the ‘wonderful atmosphere’ on this day. 

Ema Noronha said that the Sao Joao celebrations are truly unique and for many, it was a real family event with people of all ages participating in it. 

Savio Coutinho from Colmorod who used to organise a public Sao Joao events there, said he had been receiving several calls from people, who wanted to know if they could participate in competitions held on this day like the Sao Joao Dress or Copel competition.
