PANJIM: Superintendent of Police, Vijay Singh has been shunted out as Superintendent of Police (North) and SP (traffic) Vishram Borkar has been given additional charge of the post, chief minister Manohar Parrikar told media Tuesday.
The order which is likely to be issued Wednesday appears to come, close on the heels of a former ANC informer K Naik naming a serving police officer, allegedly a trusted lieutenant of the SP, as his alleged inspiration to indulge in extortion. Naik, after being released on the extortion charge was subsequently arrested on a chain snatching charge at Porvorim and produced before Vijay Singh.
According to sources, Singh got the complainant and the accused in one room along with the local PI and whatever transpired therein, Naik did an about turn and said that he had only named the officer in question as he had been pressurised by the investigating officer.
It may be recalled that in the extortion case the accused had confessed on camera naming three police officials and ascribing a major role to the first one.
The inquiry was subsequently handed over to Mapusa SDPO, Serafino Dias who completed his inquiry and handed the report to the Director General of Police Kishen Kumar.
Surprisingly, crime watchers say, based on this statement infront of his alleged “mentor” the SP ordered another inquiry, this time to be held by Porvorim Sub Divisional Police Officer, N C Raikar.
The chief minister said that Bosco George who is presently ADC to the governor could be the next North SP, but he is likely to take over only from March.
George had earlier served as North SP, then transferred and the charge was handed over to controversial IPS officer Veenu Bansal – whose name has cropped up in the politicians-police-drug nexus case.
