MARGAO: The Margao police have detained Raju alias Raja alias Tiger Talwar, a resident of Pedda-Khareband, under the National Security Act.
He has since been lodged at the Central Jail, Aguada, after his detention last night as per the order of the South Goa District Magistrate N D Agrawal.
In his one-page order, Agrawal had directed the Superintendent of Police, South, to detain and lodge Talwar at the central jail, Aguada, since his activities are prejudicial to public order. The order was passed under section 3 of the National Security Act, 1980.
The Magistrate’s order comes in the wake of a confidential report submitted by district police chief Shekar Prabhudesai to the District Magistrate calling for action against the detenue under the NSA.
In his report, the district police chief said that the detenue has been carrying out his criminal activities with impunity. The report stated that the detenue is incorrigible and uncontrollable and his activities are a threat to public peace, order and tranquility.
Briefing newsmen this evening, SP Prabhudesai said that Talwar has been involved in many criminal activities in the district. He said that Talwar was involved in a robbery in Margao, besides an attempt to murder case in Colva and another body offense in the jurisdiction of Maina-Curtorim police station. Besides, around six non-congnizable cases were pending against the detenue, he added.
Replying to a question, Prabhudessai said that the district police had recommended Talwar’s detention under the NSA in view of his criminal activities. He answered in the negative when asked whether the district police had recommended names of two other criminal elements to the District Magistrate for detention under the NSA.
This is the first case of NSA detention since the Parrikar government assumed office in March last. The National Security Act was invoked in both the district by the government in December last year to deal with the rising criminal activities.
