PONDA: After many years, locals in Ponda taluka witnessed nullahs, gutters were choked resulting to flooding of roads in city and villages. The locals blamed that due to the Lok Sabha election Code of Conduct, the cleaning work was delayed.
The moderate rain on Wednesday morning in Ponda taluka including city led to flooding of areas such as Public Coffe, Udipi Hotel, Bus Stand and market area. Mud silt entered many shops as the gutters and nullahs were choked with plastics and other waste materials thrown by the shopkeepers and vendors.
Though Ponda Municipal Council had launched the pre-monsoon works earlier, it appeared that the moderate rain in the morning flooded the city and videos of not only city but also of the villages such as Adpoi, Kavlem, Bethora etc went viral.
The panchayat and municipal authorities said that due to delay in Code of Conduct, the work of cleaning choked gutters was pending and they had already commenced the work on it.
The locals blamed the government for delay in conducting gutters and nullahs cleaning work. If this is the situation what will be the condition in heavy monsoon.
In the morning there was moderate rain but thereafter from 1.30 pm to till late evening the day remained dry. The major problem faced in city was the potholes which were filled uneven with mud creating a nuisance for the bike riders and cars. The roads in the city are dug for sewerage lines but yet not properly covered at many places.
