VASCO: After a moderate rainfall for few hours, Cortalim village including areas such as Vollant and Santrant were flooded with rainwater due to the chocked drains near old fish market.
MLA Alina Saldhana, PWD officials and DBL officials visited the site and later cleaning of chocked drains was carried out.
Locals from Cortalim village, especially from Santrant and Vollant were badly affected by the rain which has just taken its pace from past few days.
On Wednesday morning, old fish market along with the residential houses from low lying areas of Cortalim was flooded so much so that rainwater entered in their houses.
Speaking to Herald, Cortalim panch Antonio Joao Fernandes said that the flooding took place due to chocking of major drainage next to old fish market. The drain was chocked due to plastics, silt and all sorts of solid waste which came into the drains due to heavy water flow.
He further said that the retaining wall of Satyawan Naik’s house was collapsed after it became week due to water clogging. The rainwater and silt entered into the house of Romeo Fernandes, who had to clear the clogged water and silt.
“The water flow was of such a speed due to the overflowing of main drainage that over hundred of coconuts from the house of Rano Shirodkar which were kept out got washed away,” he added.
Fernandes said after intimating about the incidents to MLA Alina, she reached at the spot and saw the situation. Even the PWD and DBL officials were present during the inspection and immediately labourers were deployed to clear the chocked drainage after that the water subsided.
Another panch of Cortalim Anita Kenkre said that the fish vendors sitting in the old shade is facing the rainwater flooding problem.
“The new fish market complex despite being ready is yet to get operational. It has been many years now that the Cortalim Village Panchayat has to pay Rs 20,000 per month to the Confraria of Cortalim. If the new market complex gets operational soon then it will be a big relief to the local vendors,” she opined.
