MARGAO: Residents of Fatorda are up in arms over the proposed road widening of the Arlem-Fatorda road as they feared demolition of their age-old houses and other structures.
The residents took to the streets after PWD officials started demarcation of the acquired land for the proposed road widening. They raised a hue and cry after the demarcation revealed that veranda of houses and other structures will have to make way for the road-widening project.
Agitated residents demanded to know how old houses were coming within the road widening alignment while a building which is built right along the road side finds no mention in the alignment.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai, who rushed to the spot, assured the angry residents that nothing would be done against their interest. He later told the media that the PWD had acquired the land for 18 meters when there was a consensus amongst the residents for only 15.5 meters. “I have assured the residents that no work on the road widening project will be tendered and commence without resolving their grievances”, he said, adding that the PWD will be told to take up the work only after taking the locals into confidence.
