The panel which probed into the theft of a lady patient at Hospicio’s maternity ward has strongly recommended installation of Closed Circuit TVs in the hospital and strengthening of security manpower at the district hospital.
The inquiry committee, which has submitted its report to the government, has also recommended a ban on the interns and students coming to the hospital from private institutions on security grounds.
Sources in the know said the panel observed that the interns and students – on an average numbering around 40 – is not of any help to the hospital vis-à-vis the patients. In fact, it has been pointed out that the many of the students study Homeopathy and Ayurveda medicine and prove to be little help to the hospital.
On the manpower requirements, the report is believed to have asked the government to beef up the security arrangements so that all the wards are covered by the security. Another important suggestion was to enforce the rule that patients should not keep any valuables in person while admitted in the hospital.
A senior doctor said that valuables such as gold ornaments, including mangalsutra should not be worn by the patients while undergoing treatment at the hospital as a matter of abundant caution.
The Committee was constituted following the daring theft of a mangalsutra from the person of a lady patient from the maternity ward. The miscreant, posing as a doctor, made his appearance in the maternity ward and after administering the patient an injection relieved her of her gold chain.
The Margao police, which is investigating the case, has so far made no progress and is believed to have obtained no concrete clues towards detection of the case.
