PANJIM: Former mayor of Panjim Surendra Furtado has stated that he is “100 per cent contesting” the upcoming Assembly elections.

While expressing confidence that he should be the one getting the Congress ticket for Panjim, he reiterated that he will contest the elections and referred to what had transpired during the recent elections of the City of the Corporation of Panaji (CCP).
He said that he formed a panel called ‘Ami Ponjekar’ for CCP elections that had representatives of various parties in the united fight against the panel fielded by BJP and sitting MLA Atanasio Monserrate.
Furtado said, “Even though the panel was formed at the last moment, they still managed to get some seats as well as a decent chunk of the overall vote share, which served as a blow to the MLA.”
He also took a dig at Monserrate and questioned what development has happened in Panjim given that Monserrate joined BJP on the grounds that he would usher in development.
Furtado listed various areas where Panjim was lacking, be it the poor quality of roads, cleanliness as well as other problems at the markets, with traffic congestion etc.
It may be recalled that Furtado had recently asked the CCP Mayor to give a report card of the work the Corporation had carried out in the last seven months.
