PANJIM: Even as the State government has granted partial relaxation to the lockdown, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has decided to keep the City Municipal market shut till May 3 for general public.

The corporation has also warned of action if any shops, rather than grocery, vegetables and pharmacies, are found open within its jurisdiction. Addressing media on Monday, City Mayor Uday Madkaikar said the city market, except for vegetable and grocery stores, will remain shut till May 3 or till the time the State government issues fresh guidelines allowing it to
reopen. “We have to take all the precautions. Opening of market will see hundreds of people visiting the area and it would be real difficult to have social distancing there. Hence, we have decided to keep it close,” he said.
Madkaikar also said that since the government has not granted permissions, no other shops would be allowed to function and if any, the same would be in violation of lockdown norms.
“We have granted permissions to some restaurants to open their kitchens, provided they do home delivery or take away. The restaurant as such will not be functional,” he said.
CCP has also decided to grant permissions to those who want to start their business or work from home. Also, to ensure that people don’t come out of their houses to pay house tax, trade licence fees or other charges, the Corporation has introduce online mode of payment. Madkaikar reiterated that sale and consumption of smokeless tobacco and its product and chewing gum is banned within the city and warned of action against violators.
