PANJIM: In a bid to find solution to traffic congestion in the capital city, the district magistrate has sought a detailed plan of the vehicular movement and parking space from the Traffic Department within 45 days.
The meeting chaired by Collector Nila Mohanan and attended by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dharmesh Angle and Commissioner of Corporation of City of Panaji Sanjit Rodrigues also witnessed discussions on traffic chaos around Caculo Mall, St Inez.
Sources said directions have been issued to notify the road stretch near the mall as a ‘no-parking’ zone.
In addition to this, Mohanan has also directed the agencies concerned to incorporate details about the ‘no-parking’ area, ‘pay-parking’ area and speed breakers in the city. “Based on the report, a comprehensive plan will be prepared to find alternatives and ease vehicular traffic,” officials said.
Moreover, abandoned vehicles will be lifted and kept at government-designated yards. The Panjim police launched this drive two years ago wherein several hundred vehicles – including government-owned vehicles – which were abandoned at various public places were picked and shifted to Altinho, Panjim and Bainguinim. The owners, who subsequently approached the police to claim their vehicles in response to summons sent by the department, were handed the vehicles after paying
relevant fines.
