MARGAO: Residents and parents have raised concerns over worsening traffic congestion near the Comba railway gate in Margao, where several educational institutions located within a short stretch attract heavy vehicular movement during school hours.
According to locals, the presence of five to six schools and a law college within a 200–300 metre radius results in thousands of parents converging on the area daily to drop off and pick up students. The narrow roads, coupled with increasing traffic volume, have made commuting difficult and led to frequent bottlenecks.

Resident Dixon Vaz questioned the authorities’ emphasis on AI-based traffic enforcement systems, arguing that basic infrastructure and traffic management issues require urgent attention.
“Before focusing on AI cameras, the authorities should improve road conditions, maintain cleanliness and address the traffic problems that residents face every day,” Vaz said.
Parent Roshni Rodrigues said traffic conditions have deteriorated further following the closure of the railway gate, making vehicle movement more cumbersome for motorists and parents.
“The closure of the railway gate has added to the congestion, and it has become increasingly difficult to navigate the area during peak hours,” she said.
Residents are now demanding the deployment of police personnel to regulate traffic during school timings and ensure smoother vehicular movement in the busy educational hub.
They have also called on the concerned authorities to undertake long-term measures to ease congestion and improve road safety for students, parents and other commuters using the stretch.
