MARGAO: Over 15 parents met the Salcete deputy superintendent of police after being fined for parking two-wheelers in a no-parking zone near Fatima Convent School (FCS) on Friday. They slammed the Margao traffic cell for not setting up proper parking lots and regulating traffic during peak hours.
The parents complained that there was no spot near FCS where they could park and wait for their children. Hence, they were forced to park beside the school gate, which led to the CCTV traffic cell issuing challans to them on Friday. They stated that they would stop parking near the gate once a proper parking lot was constructed.
“We are worried about our children as vehicular traffic is increasing everyday. The children at an increased risk while crossing roads. That is why we prefer to pick them up in front of the school gates,” said Fiona, a parent.
Local Dixon Vaz stated, “The traffic cell, instead of preventing roadblocks, is sitting in the CCTV room and sending challans to the poor parents, who have come to pick their kids.”
The parents requested the police to regulate traffic and, if possible, make the road one-way when school begins and ends. They also assured to cooperate and avoid creating traffic jams.
Meanwhile, the Dy SP Guruprasad Mhapne said, “We are working hard to convince the school management to let parents use the land in their compound for 10-15 minutes in the afternoon. But the school is not cooperating with us. I have proposed a joint meeting of parents, the school management and traffic police on Tuesday. I appeal to the affected parents to join in the discussion.”
