PONDA: PWD and Transport Minister Sudin Dhavlikar advised parents to caution their children over seeking lifts from strangers.
Dhavlikar expressed shock over the recent incident in South Goa, where a minor girl was allegedly kidnapped by a group of Indian tourists.
“It’s a shocking incident and according to media reports, the girl had asked for a lift. It’s the duty of the parents to advise their children, especially the girl child, not to seek lifts from strangers,” said Dhavlikar during scholarships, uniforms and note books distribution programme organised by Queula Panchayat on Monday.
“This year through the Madhavrao Dhavlikar Trust, 22 students from Marcaim constituency, including four from Ponda constituency, have been admitted for DEd course at Khanapur and another nine students from Marcaim constituency for nursing course at Gataprabha in neighbouring state,” he said.
Queula Sarpanch Rajesh Kavlekar said the panchayat annually donates uniforms and note books to the needy students from the panchayat.
“The panchayat also awards scholarships to students ranked first and second in the SSCE and from this year, the panchayat decided to award scholarships to all those who have secured distinction. Of the three schools, there are 55 students who have secured distinction,” informed Kavlekar.
Ponda Municipal Council Chairperson Dr Radhika Nayak said teachers play an important role in the life of students and teachers must devote extra time.
“Along with teachers, it is also the responsibility of the parents to spread awareness so that students don’t fall prey to bad habits like drinking, smoking, etc,” added Dr Nayak.
