Says candidates for LS elections have to make their stand clear on airport issue

MARGAO: Goans for Dabolim Only (GFDO) convenor Fr Eremito Rebello on Saturday called upon people of Goa to shun candidates who do not demand scrapping of Mopa airport and work for upgradation of Dabolim as Goa’s lone international airport.
He also took a dig at Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for his claim that that Mopa airport would create 10,000 jobs for Goans. Reacting to the statement made by Goa Democratic Front leader Dayanand Narvekar that his party would field a candidate in South Goa if the sitting MP supports Mopa airport, Fr Eremito said, “Our stand on the airport issue is clear. The proposed airport at Mopa would spell doom for Goa and Goans. We have every document to prove that Mopa airport would not be profitable. We fail to understand why certain people are still lobbying for the proposed airport”.
He, however, reiterated GFDO’s stand that the contesting candidates should make their stand clear on Mopa and Dabolim airport. “We have already given a call to the people not to support or vote for candidates who do not demand scrapping of Mopa and retain Dabolim as Goa’s lone airport”, he asserted.
Asked to comment on Chief Minister’s statement that the proposed Mopa would create 10,000 jobs for Goan youth, Fr Eremito termed Parrikar’s claim a big lie aimed at fooling people. “How can Goa government comment on jobs when the airport would be built by the private players? Parrikar is known for telling lies. People of Goa now known him for his U-turns on several issues plaguing Goans”, he said. The GFDO, which is believed to have had a meeting in the city here on Saturday evening, is expected to unveil its future course of action next week.
