PANJIM: Claiming landslide victories in six municipal councils and victories in two others, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Tuesday assured that there will be no change in the chairperson in the municipal councils where BJP will form the ruling group. He said the chairperson elected at the start of the term will continue for all five years.
Addressing the media after meeting the elected candidates of the BJP panels, Parsekar said there won’t be any musical chairs played at the municipalities and no agreements of one year terms for chairpersons will be made in temples and churches which when done in the past had obstructed development.
“People have endorsed the performance of the BJP government of last 3.5 years, it proves that BJP government’s development has made the difference and all the social welfare schemes have reached the needy,” Parsekar said.
Parsekar said there were ‘landslide’ victories in six municipalities – Mapusa, Pernem, Bicholim, Mormugao, Curchorem and Sanguem – and victories at two others – Cuncolim and Canacona – where with the help of Independents BJP will form the ruling group.
“We wanted to take stock of the situation before the coming assembly elections and that is the reason why the party had taken this election seriously, as 25 per cent of the voters of the assembly are in municipal areas,” Parsekar said.
He said that for the first time BJP had fielded only party workers and it worked well. The chief minister, however, failed to answer if only party workers will be fielded in the Assembly elections, especially in the background of the unofficial entry of Dabolim Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho into the BJP.
