PONDA: The scorching summer has forced the patients at the Sub District Hospital, Ponda to spend sleepless nights. The situation is such that the hospital, which was inaugurated four years ago, has poor facilities including few ceiling fans which are insufficient to provide respite to the patients.
And to add to it, the hospital is facing staff crunch with only a few doctors on duty.
Many patients in general ward have complained that they are forced to spend sleepless nights as there are a few fans installed in the ward.
Viraj Sapre, a social worker informed Herald about the hardship of the patients in the general ward. When Herald paid a visit to the Sub-district Hospital it found that 32-bedded general ward had only 8 fans.
The current situation at the hospital was evident by the fact that a table fan was placed near the patient’s bed by his relative. When inquired about the table fan placed near the patient, the relative said there are a few ceiling fans in the ward and the heat is unbearable and as such we are forced to bring table fans from home to provide some relief to the patients.
When questioned, the hospital sources said patients and relatives are not authorised to bring fans and appliances from their homes but due to the prevailing situation we are helpless and have allowed them to bring the same.
When contacted the hospital medical superintendent Dr Pradeep Shinkre said, he is trying his best to solve all the problems related to patients with available resources and assured to look into matter.
According to Viraj Sapre, Government should solve the problem urgently. If needed, it should contact corporate houses, which can provide fans to these patients through their CSR funds.
He expressed surprise that despite of four years after its inauguration, government has failed to provide the basic facilities at the hospital and that too fans which do not cost much.
Two lifts have been left non-functional and two toilets too are in a bad state, he added.
