Perform or resign: MMC chief to municipal inspectors

VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Deepak Naik, while raising concern over the failure of municipal inspectors to bring discipline in the Vasco vegetable market, has asked the inspectors to resign if they cannot perform their duties.

He said that despite MMC taking a serious stand on removing encroachments, the inspectors were unable to prove that seriousness with their performance, which makes him feel that the inspectors are unfit.
“We had started a drive to remove encroachments from the vegetable market, but after two days, the encroachments have returned. It makes me feel that the municipal inspectors are either incompetent or vendors do not feel scared of them. If they cannot perform, they should resign,” said Naik.
Last week, the MMC had started an anti-encroachment drive with an assurance to Vasco citizens that the vegetable market would be congestion-free. MMC had even brought discipline to the market, but it was only for few days. By Sunday, the vendors had gone back to keeping their vegetables on the roadside, due to which the councillors had to face severe criticism from the locals.
Naik has now decided to first pull up the inspectors. He stated, “I have moved a note to the chief officer asking him to issue an order to the inspectors to remain present till 7 pm to continue checking on encroachment activities in the vegetable market. If they cannot deliver to the present need, then it is better that they resign. In any case we will ensure a congestion-free vegetable market.”
