Petition Filed in Bombay High Court Over SEC Order Appointing Canacona SDM as Electoral Officer

A petition has been filed before the Bombay High Court challenging an order issued by the State Election Commission (SEC) appointing a senior government official as Electoral Registration Officer for ward delimitation in Canacona.

The plea seeks to quash the SEC’s February 27 order appointing Prataprao Gaunkar, Deputy Collector and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Canacona, to the post, alleging a conflict of interest.

The petitioner has argued that the appointment could compromise the neutrality required in the delimitation process, raising concerns over fairness and transparency.

Taking cognisance of the matter, the High Court has directed the SEC to file its response and has posted the case for further hearing on March 23.

The outcome of the case is expected to have implications for the ward delimitation process in the region, which is a crucial step ahead of upcoming local body elections.
