An American citizen has emerged at the centre of a major security probe in India, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arresting him along with six Ukrainian nationals in a case involving alleged drone warfare training, illegal border crossings, and suspected links to armed groups operating near the country’s northeast.
The individual has been identified as Matthew Aaron VanDyke, who is known internationally as a security analyst, war correspondent, and documentary filmmaker.

VanDyke first came into global focus during the Libyan Civil War, when he joined rebel forces on the ground and was later detained during the conflict. His involvement in active combat zones contributed to his reputation as a figure closely associated with unconventional warfare environments.
Following his time in Libya, VanDyke went on to establish Sons of Liberty International (SOLI), an organisation that offers military training and strategic advisory support to local armed groups in conflict regions across the world.
According to officials, the ongoing investigation is examining the extent of his activities in India, particularly in connection with alleged training operations and cross-border movements linked to insurgent elements in the northeast.
