PONDA: The Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) on Tuesday decided to initiate legal action to enter its name in the revenue records pertaining to Kranti Maidan which currently stands in the name of Military Camp.
This was decided at the meeting of the council and a resolution has been passed to this effect.
Addressing the media after the meeting, PMC Chairperson Pradeep Naik said that in the revenue record (Form I&XIV) pertaining to Survey Number 177, Military Camp is wrongly mentioned as the occupant. Kranti Maidan is built on Survey Number 177. He said that the Council would consult legal experts before initiating the legal process to rectify the mistake.
Naik said that the land was originally registered in the name of Ponda Municipality as per Portuguese record and thereafter in 1972 during Goa government survey, the name of Military Camp was wrongly recorded in the occupant column.
PMC learnt about land survey department mistake recently when a military official filed an RTI application with regard to that land. Survey Number 177 is in prime location in the city in front of Ponda Police Station. In 1954, the Portuguese military took possession of municipal land and after Goa Liberation the said land came into possession of Indian Military.
However, in 1991, the Kranti Maidan land admeasuring 2530 square meters was handed over to the Ponda municipality.
