Police deployed at 2 slaughter houses

Police personnel have been deployed at two slaughter houses in Pilar and Santa Cruz after a local was arrested while transporting cattle allegedly for slaughtering purpose.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Deu Benaulikar told reporters that Hyder Kamal Sheikh alias Avelino Rebello of Zuari was caught red-handed with three oxen in a tempo at Agassaim.
The action was taken after a complaint was filed by Angela Kazi of Panjim Animal Welfare Society on Wednesday night. She had filed a similar complaint with the DySP on January 13 as well.
Acting prompt, the police conducted futile raid at different places but managed to crack down on Sheikh on Thursday afternoon.
“We were told that residents were complaining that their cattle are missing from their respective places and they suspect that animals are being taken to slaughter houses,” he said.
Agassiam police inquired whether Goa Meat Complex was supplying meat to the two slaughter houses, to which the latter confirmed negative. An inspection was then carried out at Pillar and Santa Cruz.
“We did not find traces of animal slaughtering. Nonetheless, we have deployed our staff to keep a vigil,” the officer added.
Sheikh is arrested under section 11 (D) (F) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. This has a third complaint of cattle theft.
