PANJIM: Whether it was the absence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is also the Home Minister, or the moratorium on the recruitment process in the State, Goa Police has an acute staff shortage of 871 personnel in key areas.
As per a report of Goa Police, it has a sanctioned staff of 6946 but the actual strength is 6054, which means it has 13 per cent less staff. This is at a time when the State is striving hard to keep drugs and prostitution at bay.
Besides, there has been a spurt in the number of crimes in the State due to the influx of migrants.
What is interesting is that many of these vacancies are of the key posts of four SPs, 14 DySPs, Police Inspectors (10) and Police Sub Inspectors (141) and not forgetting 364 police constables.
Sources told Herald that the files have already been moved for recruitment but were delayed due to the CM’s ill health.
Herald contacted Inspector General of Police (IPS) Jaspal Singh for his comments but could not get a satisfactory reply. “I am not in the office right now so cannot tell you anything off hand. It is better to have documents in hand when I speak,” was his reply.
However, replying to a question tabled by Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao during the ongoing session of the Assembly, Parrikar in a written reply said, “The proposal of the Goa Police for creation of additional various posts has been approved by the High Level Powered Committee constituted by the government.”
Following is the detailed list of vacancies in the department:
In group A, 1 Deputy Inspector General of Police, 4 Superintendents of Police of Goa Civil Services cadre, 3 Assistant Directors, 14 Deputy Superintendents of Police and 3 Scientific officers.
In Group B, 1 Senior expert/Dy Director, 10 Police Inspectors, 1 Police Inspector (Armourer), 1 First Expert, 141 Police Sub Inspectors (39 females), 2 Second Experts, 4 Scientific Assistants, 2 Scientific experts cum photographers, 4 Police Sub Inspectors (wireless), 1 Police Sub Inspector (Cipher), 4 police Sub inspectors (Radio Mechanic), 2 Police Sub Inspectors Armourer, 15 Sub Inspectors (Master) 10 Sub Inspectors (Engine Driver), 1 head clerk, and 3 Accountants.
In Group C, 1 Statistical Assistant, 16 Assistant Sub Inspectors, 1 Assistant Sub Inspector (Radio Mechanic) and 2 Assistant Sub Inspectors (Wireless Operator), 21 (male and female) Head Constables, 1 head constable (cipher), 2 head constables Radio Telephony Operator), 21 Head Constables (Seacunny), 21 Head Constables (Engine Driver), 3 Head Constables Driver (Grade II), 42 Police Constable Drivers (Grade III), 1 language teacher, 6 stenographers, 18 LDCs, 1 photographer (finger prints), 1 Laboratory Attendant, 2 laboratory technicians, 4 Drivers, 1 Foreman, 1 Welder, 2 barbers, 1 upholster, 2 tailors, 1 Electrician, 1 Assistant Electrician, 2 Cobblers, 364 Police Constables (male and females), 10 police constables (band), 1 police constable (Mast Luker), 26 police constables (Wireless Messenger), 21 constables (Seacunny), 21 Constables (engine driver), 1 constable (greaser) and 1 constable (electrician).
