PONDA: Ponda MLA Ravi Naik on Sunday urged the State government to take more precautionary measures and if required to install more COVID-19 checking booths at the borders as thermal checking is not sufficient.

He said swab of every truck driver must be taken at the checkposts for COVID test before allowing entry to them into State. If needed more testing booths should be installed at the borders so that before their entry into the State they could be detected for COVID infection at the border itself.
He expressed concerned over rising COVID cases in State since past four days stating that now reaching to 20 and more likely to rise due to entry of people from outside State.
“Recently around 350 people entered Goa through trains arrived from Kerala and New Delhi, besides, several goods vehicle drivers. Under such circumstances, more government efforts are needed to control the spread of coronavirus in the State,” he added.
“If proper tests were conducted the cases would have not increased. Now that the COVID positive truck driver entered at Ponda locality, it may spread coronavirus if the number of such drivers increased.”
Naik said, “While checking the identity at the borders, the voters’ election card should be made mandatory. All the border checkposts from Mollem to Patradevi should be strictly monitored and testing should be carried out. The nurses, doctors and police on COVID duty should be also checked at regular intervals for the safety of their families.”
He also appealed to the government to provide proper transport or train facility for the migrants wishing to travel to their native places, in absence of which they are suffering and many even died in the accidents on their way home. Any government, whether State or Centre, should treat them well on a humanitarian ground.
